Forest, hills, rivers
Forêt de Tronçais

The Tronçais forest, which extends over almost 11,000 hectares, is one of the most beautiful forests in France. It is known to house high quality oak and today exhibits specimens hundreds of years old.

The oldest oak of the Forêt de Tronçais is  planted in 1580!

There are many beautiful places next to the forest, such as the charming village of Hérisson. The forest is home to several lakes, including Saint-Bonnet Lake. Plenty to do for the active holidaymaker in the Allier/Auvergne with its many beautiful cycling and walking routes and the lakes for swimming.

More about the history of the forest, its remarkable trees, lakes, legends and activities can be found at

Foret de Troncais

Bellowing deer and searching mushrooms

In the fall, the mating season is in full swing for the deer that live in the Tronçais forest. For several weeks, the mysterious bellowing of the deer resonates. Impressive! The females (does) all want to mate with the red deer that can bellow the most and loudest. Sometimes deer trying to capture the same doe can collide with blows from antlers.

To respect the animals and their natural environment, guided outings are organized in the Tronçais forest. Cap Troncais  plans 4 visits per year at nightfall.

Lovers of good mushroom dishes will find their happiness in Tronçais. Chanterelles, amanita, porcini mushrooms, etc. can be found there and Cap Tronçais offer trips to go mushroom hunting. On the programme: recognition of edible species, picking and preparing them.

The Route of the Painted Churches of Bourbonnais invites you to discover 24 buildings steeped in art and history with exceptional murals.

Little by little, thanks to restoration work, they come back to life and regain their shine, as in Bègues, Biozat, Briailles, Louchy-Monfand, Lurcy-Lévis or Taxat-Senat.

While some are probably still buried under several layers of plaster.
